Who is Derek Taylor Kent and Where Can You Meet Him?

Derek Taylor Kent started writing when he was 11. His first works were funny and scary poems for his friends. Mr. Kent graduated to books at the age of 15. You may have heard his stories on MP3 recordings of Musketeers and Menservants which starts a series of stories about the tale of a young wizard’s apprentice who comes to the rescue of a good King named Kalimari.

Now, as an adult, Mr. Kent has written a new book, Scary School. This new story is told from the perspective of the Hall Monitor, a ghost. The school in question educates humans and monsters!

Want to learn more? Well, you have the easiest opportunity! Come to school this Friday for an assembly with Derek Taylor Kent as our guest. Then grab your parents and head over to the Redlands Barnes and Noble bookstore for your very own signed copy of Scary School. Mr. Kent will be at Barnes and Noble during our school’s Barnes and Noble fundraiser that runs from 4 pm to 8 pm this Friday, January 27th!

Winter Choral Concert

The 2nd annual YCJUSD Winter Choral Concert was held Thursday, December 15th at Mesa View Middle School. The concert featured the Cubby Singers from Dunlap Elementary, CE Singers from Competitive Edge Charter Academy, both the choirs from PVMS and MVMS, and the Madrigal Choir from YHS.

“Combining choir groups helps students from different schools and levels work together as a whole. This also helps inspire the newer members to ‘stay the course’ so they can move up in time. Combining concerts also serves as a way for parents to see the progression from beginning to advanced choirs.

This was Park View's second concert of the year and everyone was very pleased with the performance. Our goal now is to begin the hard work necessary to do well in upcoming competitive festivals,” commented Mr. Stockman.

Box Top$ Contest Going On Now!

YES, we are still collecting Box Top$! Our PTSA has started a new contest and will run through February 14, 2012! PVMS families can earn cash for our school by clipping Box Tops coupons from hundreds of participating products. Students should turn in box tops to their 4th period teacher. The class with the most box tops receives a pizza party. All proceeds go directly towards programs and materials that benefit PVMS.

YOUR PARTICIPATION IS THE KEY TO OUR SUCCESS!

Box tops can be turned in at the office throughout the year even after this contest is completed.

PVMS Bands Perform

On December 14th the Park View Symphonic Band and Beginning Band held their annual Winter Concert. This is the sixth performance for the Symphonic Band this year and the first for the Beginning Band.

“The Symphonic Band has come a long way since their first performance in October and we are excited about upcoming competitive festivals. It is always amazing to see the improvement from one concert to the next,” said Mr. Stockman.

Symphonic Band Performs

The Park View Middle School Symphonic Band participated in the annual Yucaipa Christmas Parade on Saturday, December 10th. Students prepared for the parade during FLEX memorizing their music, practicing marching, and playing in formation. This is one of two community events the Symphonic Band performs in as a ‘thank you’ to the community for their support! “The Christmas Parade introduces students to ‘Marching Band,’ which is a choice at the high school,” encouraged Mr. Stockman.

Imagine sitting on the sidelines and recognizing our vintage uniforms as something you, as a parent, might have worn in the 1980’s. “A great time was had by all and parents, family, and friends can be proud of how hard all of the band members worked and how much they have learned in such a short period of time,” commented Mr. Stockman.

PTSA Needs YOU!

Many events at Park View Middle School would not be possible without the volunteer work of our PTSA members. Being a part of PTSA is a good way to be involved and help enhance your child's experience. PTSA is in need of parents to help out on our board. Most of the current board members will be moving on to the high school next year. We’d really like to leave PVMS in the hands of dedicated PTSA parents.

A Giant 'THANK YOU'

We just wanted to say a big thank you to Mr. John Marco and his pal Abbygail of Yucaipa. The two of them stop by to see us in the morning when they are out for their daily walk. Abbygail is a sweet, patient dog who loves our students. Abbygail gave them a wonderful Christmas gift!

The class received a large stocking with a Christmas card from Abbygail filled with stuffed panda bears! The students loved that they were thought of. The bears sit on each of the student’s desk and receive a lot of love. This is one of those warm holiday moments that you hear of . . . when a person finds it in their heart to give to others for the pure joy of giving. "Mr. Marco and Abbygail are special and have made my class very happy!”

Mrs. Graham and everyone from room 44!

CJSF Service Club

The California Junior Scholarship Federation (CJSF) is a club that emphasizes high standards of scholarship and community service for California Middle School students. CJSF encourages service to the school and the community while fostering pride in academic scholastic achievement. Founded in 1967, CJSF is part of CSF, the oldest scholarship institution in the state of California.

The fall membership is limited to eighth graders. Seventh graders are eligible to join CJSF for the spring semester. See Mrs. Hadder for more information.

A 'Stone Soup' Thanksgiving

During the week prior to Thanksgiving break, California Junior Scholarship Federation and Mrs. Graham's students learned about service.  The students studied the story Stone Soup, learning about sharing and working together as a group. CJSF worked with Mrs. Graham’s class and formed Buddy Partnerships on this project. Students donated the ingredients for the soup.  The students worked on several projects and activities with the culmination of a “Stone Soup” feast enjoyed by both groups.

Builders Club Forming Now

Come down to room 45 and join us for Builders Club. Here you can develop leadership skills, build moral character, and support and serve in different community projects throughout the year such as the Yucaipa Christmas Parade and Relay for Life! It’s a lot of fun, and best of all, it’s student run! With Mr. Marino and Ms. Holod as advisors, it will be lots of fun!

This is a great way to get involved!
